They say April showers bring May flowers. I don’t know about showers or flowers, but April did bring a nice shower of dividend income. April also brought some nice dividend increases which will sprout into some nice May flowers. So, I guess in a way it works the same way lol. If you noticed, I have a new badge on my sidebar. I am ranked number 67 on Feedspot’s Top 100 Dividend Blogs and Websites for Investors! That’s cool I made the list with so many of the other great websites and members of the DGI community! Very excited about that! So now, without further ado, for the month of April 2018 I received $447.67 in dividends from four (4) companies!
Medical Properties Trust (MPW) – $225.00
Starwood Property Trust (STWD) – $103.20
Realty Income Corp (O) – $41.27
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) – $78.20
April 2018 Dividend Income Total: $447.67
The is the most I have ever received for a quarter starting month. This month shows a 15.6% year over year increase compared with last year when April 2017 paid me $387.14 in dividend income. I have noticed that, with the exception of GSK, these first quarter months are really REIT heavy for me. Much more than any other month set. The plus side is, those are some really great names in the REIT community and they provide some great dividends.
Next up comes the dividend increases (and one decrease). GSK had decreased its dividend for next quarter. Last quarter, GSK had declared a much higher dividend which contributed nicely to this month’s dividend income. The previous dividend of $0.6467 per share has been cut to $0.5248 per share. This decreased my forward annual dividend income from GSK from $304.08 to $251.90. That is a decrease of $51.18. There is nothing shocking about this as GSK’s dividend is always different each quarter. Every quarter they declare a different dividend, sometimes higher and sometimes lower.
Luckily, other stocks stepped up with their own dividend increases that more then covered any decreases from GSK (or alternatively, even maximize GSK’s increases on good quarters). First up is PG which increased its dividend 4% to $0.7172 per share. This increased my yearly income from PG: $68.95 to $71.72 for a $2.77 increase. Next, SO raised their dividend to $0.60 per share which increased my annual income from SO: $470.96 to $487.20 for a $16.24 increase.
Then IBM raised their dividend to $1.57 per share which increased my yearly income from IBM: $578.95 to $605.96 for a $27.01 increase. Some consider this a weak dividend increase from IBM. Well, weak or not I will happily take it! Finally, there was SRLP which raised their dividend to $0.6525 per share. This 2% increase raised my yearly income from SRLP: $1,466.25 to $1,500.75 for a $34.50 increase. SRLP has become the top dividend powerhouse in my portfolio; 16 consecutive quarters of dividend increases with expected dividend increases of $0.015 per share from now to throughout 2019!
Taken altogether, the total amount of dividend increases I received adds up to $80.52. Minus the dividend decrease from GSK ($51.18) I have a net gain of $29.34. After this month, my portfolio now stands to generate $8,797.95 in forward dividend income over the next 12 months. So how about the rest of you? How did you do this month? Break any records? Let me know in the comments below! 🙂
