It’s almost Halloween. I was walking home this week and something triggered a flashback of one of my favorite Halloween memories.
While I was walking home from work, I pasted by a corner house with a jack-o-lantern outside on the front steps.
I passed by pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns before, but for some reason this triggered an old memory.
I remember, I was 5 years old and in kindergarten.
For kindergarten, my class was going to be making jack-o-lanterns out of real pumpkins.
We were going to be carving them up into faces and then lighting them up with candles.
This was going to be a lot of fun.
However, I was sick that day and was unable to go to school. I was sick a lot during kindergarten (In fact, I missed one-third of the year being out sick).
So, I missed making the jack-o-lanterned in class.
That afternoon, I may have been at the dining table or my room, but I remember I heard my mother say “Robert, come. Look who is here.”
I was surprised. It was my kindergarten teacher Mrs. K!
She had a bag with pumpkins and supplies. She had come to my apartment to make jack-o-lanterns with me. Just so I wouldn’t miss out.
To this day, I find that amazing. That a teacher would do that.
It was really fun. My 3-year-old brother also was given a pumpkin and he carved out his own (with help).
We sat on the dining room table and did this. I remember sticking my hand in the gooey pumpkin and carving the eyes and mouth.
In the end, we put candles inside the pumpkin, turned off the lights, and saw how cool it looked.
It was a really cool experience that I remember to this day.
That was 30 years ago (I can’t believe I am writing that, where did the time go?)
Thus, that is one of my favorite Halloween memories!
